Ardwick Blockade: A Milestone for Swietelsky UK
Looking back at one of the most ambitious engineering weeks in the North West, the Ardwick blockade marked a significant milestone in the Manchester Piccadilly Corridor Upgrade.
This intensive rail possession was a key part of the ongoing programme to modernise one of the UK’s busiest rail corridors, enhancing reliability, capacity, and resilience for thousands of passengers every day.
Over nine days of continuous, highly coordinated work, teams from Network Rail, the Central Rail Systems Alliance, and partner organisations delivered an extensive package of renewals: 11 sets of points renewed across six lines, 1.2 km of track replaced, over 4,000 new sleepers installed, and 9 km of signalling cable upgraded. The scale, precision, and logistical complexity of this operation demanded meticulous planning, exacting execution, and stringent safety measures at every stage of the blockade.
A highlight of the operation was the outstanding contribution of Swietelsky UK’s Kirow crane teams. Their expertise in tandem lifting operations enabled heavy track panels and other infrastructure components to be moved safely and efficiently. Using Kirow 250 cranes equipped with advanced control systems, operators maintained precision even in challenging weather and constrained site conditions. This combination of specialist plant, highly trained operators, and expert coordination ensured that work progressed smoothly while minimising risks, demonstrating how modern rail projects rely as much on people as on machinery.
Beyond the technical achievements, the blockade underscored the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and shared focus. Every member of the project - from signalling engineers and track specialists to crane operators and controllers - contributed to a seamless delivery. Their dedication and professionalism ensured the programme remained on track and highlighted how industry-wide coordination delivers results that benefit passengers and communities alike.
The Ardwick blockade remains a shining example of what can be achieved when expertise, equipment, and collaboration intersect. It stands as a testament to the skill, innovation, and commitment of everyone involved in keeping the UK’s railways moving forward safely and efficiently.
A huge congratulations and thanks to all involved - a true team effort in #BuildingEverBetter!
