Precision in Motion: Swietelsky UK’s Kirow Cranes Supporting the TRU Huddersfield Works

01.10.2025

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a major, multi-billion-pound programme of railway improvements which will bring better journeys to passengers travelling across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York. Swietelsky UK has continued to demonstrate its engineering excellence and capability within the TRU project, with its fleet of Kirow rail cranes playing a vital role in the Huddersfield phase of the programme.

Throughout key weekends of work between Weeks 15 and 23, Swietelsky deployed its Kirow 250S cranes (DRK81625, DRK81626, and contingency unit DRK81624) to deliver complex and high-precision Switch & Crossing (S&C) installations and associated plain line renewals — critical infrastructure improvements supporting the wider upgrade between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.

During Week 15, two Kirow 250S cranes were utilised to install 46AB points and associated plain line, setting the foundation for a crucial section of the network.

In Week 17, the team returned to site to execute pre-delivery of S&C panels, ensuring seamless sequencing and efficiency for upcoming installations.

By Week 23, Swietelsky’s expertise and teamwork were again on full display, with three cranes (including contingency coverage) successfully installing 7835 and 7832 points, alongside further plain line works — a testament to both planning precision and operational excellence.

This demanding programme was made possible through the professionalism and dedication of the Swietelsky team, who worked tirelessly across each possession to deliver on schedule and to the highest standards of safety and quality.

Team members included:
Dave Pitson, Michael Rock, Reece Carroll, Chris Kynaston, Ricky Shaw, Jake Shinner, Peter Williams, Tyler Shaw, Christian Mead, Steven Gasson, Andrzej Lorynski, Paul Brodie, Lennon Shaw, Antony Hendry, Freddie Cunningham, Zach Raynes, and Tom Hall.

Swietelsky UK’s investment in modern, high-capacity Kirow rail cranes - combined with the skill and experience of its engineering teams - reinforces its position as a trusted partner in delivering complex rail infrastructure upgrades.

As the TRU project progresses, Swietelsky remains proud to play a part in building a more reliable, efficient, and sustainable railway between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.
