Revitalizing 928001: Final Phase of Swietelsky’s Tamping Machine Overhaul
In April 2025, Swietelsky Construction Company LTD successfully concluded the comprehensive 10-year overhaul of its On-Track Tamping Machine, 928001. This final phase focused on reassembly, system upgrades, and aesthetic enhancements, ensuring the machine's readiness for continued service in the UK rail network.
Key Highlights of the Final Phase:
Functional Testing and Brake Assessment: Post-bogie reinstallation, 928001 underwent rigorous functional testing, including a full brake test, to certify its transit readiness to Loram’s Derby Works for repainting.
Aesthetic Overhaul: At Loram’s facility, the machine received a comprehensive three-week respray, adopting Swietelsky’s new corporate livery. Upon return to the Worksop depot, SP Signs applied the final branding elements, completing the visual transformation.
Software Enhancements: Plasser & Theurer engineers implemented the latest MCO system hardware, enabling real-time remote monitoring of multiple machine functions. This upgrade aligns 928001 with newer 09 4x4 tampers, enhancing operational efficiency.
System Calibration: Following software updates, the machine underwent further functional testing and comprehensive calibration of all operating systems to ensure optimal performance.
Return to Operations: On April 11, 2025, 928001 was officially handed back to Swietelsky’s operations department, marking its readiness to resume critical track maintenance duties across the UK rail network.
